2048
Merge numbered tiles to reach 2048 in this free, addictive sliding puzzle game. Play instantly in your browser with arrow keys or a swipe.
How to Play 2048
2048 is a single-player sliding tile puzzle played on a 4x4 grid. Each move slides every tile as far as possible in one direction; when two tiles carrying the same number collide, they merge into one tile worth double. Keep merging to build your way up to the 2048 tile.
Controls
- Arrow keys (desktop) — Up, Down, Left, Right slide every tile that direction.
- Swipe (mobile/touch) — swipe in the direction you want the tiles to move.
- Every move that changes the board spawns one new tile, usually a 2 and occasionally a 4.
Winning and scoring
Reaching the 2048 tile triggers the win screen, but the board keeps going afterward — merging tiles keeps adding to your score, so strong players keep playing well past 2048 for a higher final score. Your best score is saved automatically in your browser.
Strategy tips
- Pick one corner for your highest tile and avoid moves that pull it out of that corner.
- Build a descending chain of values along one edge so merges cascade predictably.
- Avoid moving in all four directions randomly — stick mostly to two directions to keep the board organized.
What are the rules of 2048?
Slide all tiles on the 4x4 grid in one direction using the arrow keys or a swipe. Any two tiles showing the same number merge into one tile with double the value. Slide repeatedly to build up to the 2048 tile.
How do you win 2048?
You win by creating a tile with the number 2048 on it. You can keep playing after that to push your score even higher, since the board keeps accepting merges past 2048.
What happens when there are no more moves?
The game ends once the board is completely full and no two adjacent tiles share the same number, so no merge is possible in any direction. Start a new game to try again with a fresh board.
Is there a strategy to win 2048?
Keep your highest tile locked in one corner and avoid moving in the direction that pulls it away from that corner. Build up neighboring tiles in decreasing order so merges stay predictable.
Can I play 2048 on mobile?
Yes. Swipe in any direction on the board to move tiles, or use arrow keys on a desktop keyboard.
