How to Play Kakuro
Kakuro is a number-logic puzzle that plays like a crossword built from arithmetic instead of words. The grid is a mix of dark clue cells and white input cells arranged in short horizontal and vertical runs — your job is to fill every white cell so each run adds up to its clue.
Reading the clues
- Dark cells carrying a diagonal line hold the clue numbers for the runs next to them.
- A number in the top-right of a clue cell is the sum for the run of white cells to its right.
- A number in the bottom-left of a clue cell is the sum for the run of white cells below it.
- No digit 1–9 can repeat within the same run, even though it can reappear elsewhere on the board.
Handy sum combinations
Some run lengths only accept a small set of digit combinations, which makes them a great starting point:
- A 2-cell run summing to 3 can only be {1, 2}.
- A 2-cell run summing to 4 can only be {1, 3}.
- A 2-cell run summing to 16 can only be {7, 9}.
- A 2-cell run summing to 17 can only be {8, 9}.
Tips
- Start with the runs that have the fewest possible digit combinations, usually the shortest ones or those with very low or very high clues.

What are the rules of Kakuro?
Fill every white cell with a digit from 1 to 9 so that the numbers in each horizontal or vertical run add up to the clue shown next to it, with no digit repeated within the same run.
How do Kakuro clue numbers work?
Each dark clue cell can show two numbers split by a diagonal line. The number in the top-right corner is the sum for the run of white cells to its right. The number in the bottom-left corner is the sum for the run of white cells below it.
Can a digit repeat within a run?
No. Just like in Sudoku, every digit from 1 to 9 can appear at most once within any single run of connected white cells.
Is Kakuro similar to Sudoku?
They share the no-repeat-digit logic, but Kakuro replaces Sudoku's fixed grid constraints with number-sum clues, so it plays more like a crossword built from arithmetic instead of a fixed 9x9 layout.
