How to Play Sudoku
Sudoku is a logic puzzle played on a 9x9 grid split into nine 3x3 boxes. The goal is to fill every empty cell so that the digits 1 through 9 appear exactly once in each row, each column and each 3x3 box — no guessing required, just deduction.
The Rules
- Every row must contain the digits 1–9 with no repeats.
- Every column must contain the digits 1–9 with no repeats.
- Every 3x3 box must contain the digits 1–9 with no repeats.
- The starting numbers (shown in bold) are fixed and can't be changed.
Difficulty levels
Easy leaves the most starting clues on the board, so most cells can be filled by simple elimination. Medium removes more clues and occasionally needs a bit of scanning across rows and boxes together. Hard strips the grid down the most, so you'll need to hold multiple candidate numbers in mind before a cell's value becomes certain.
Tips
- Scan one number at a time across all rows and boxes to see where it can legally go.
- Look for cells where only one number is possible before guessing at others.
- Use Check often — it only flags wrong numbers, so it never gives away the answer.
What are the rules of Sudoku?
Fill the 9x9 grid so every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9 exactly once, with no repeats in any row, column or box.
How are the Sudoku puzzles generated?
Each puzzle starts from a complete, fully valid 9x9 grid solved by the computer, then a set number of cells are cleared to create the puzzle — so every puzzle is genuinely solvable and randomly different.
What is the difference between Easy, Medium and Hard?
The difficulty controls how many starting numbers are left on the board. Easy leaves the most clues, Medium leaves a moderate number, and Hard clears the most cells, requiring more logical deduction to fill in.
