How to Play FreeCell
FreeCell stands apart from Klondike and Spider because there is no hidden information — all 52 cards are dealt face up across eight columns before you make a single move. Success depends almost entirely on planning rather than luck.
Setup
Four columns receive seven cards and four columns receive six, all face up. Four empty free cells and four empty foundations sit above the tableau, ready to use.
Moving cards
- Any single card can move into an empty free cell, to hold it temporarily.
- Build tableau columns downward in alternating colors, just like Klondike.
- Move Aces to the foundations, then build each foundation up by suit from Ace to King.
- Empty tableau columns accept any card or valid sequence.
- With free cells and empty columns open, you can drag a whole valid run at once — this is called a supermove.
Understanding the supermove
The number of cards you can move together equals (1 + empty free cells) × 2 for every empty tableau column. Four empty free cells and two empty columns, for example, let you move a run of up to 20 cards in a single drag.
How do you win FreeCell?
You win once all 52 cards are stacked on the four foundations by suit, Ace through King.
What does the Auto button do?
Auto-complete safely sends any card that's ready straight to its foundation, repeating until no more automatic moves remain.
Is every FreeCell deal winnable?
The large majority are solvable with the right sequence of moves — if you get stuck, Undo freely and try a different order.
Does FreeCell work on mobile?
Yes, the board scales to fit your screen and every move works with a tap-to-select or a drag.
